Why I am Christian

This world is a complete mystery to me. Not knowing anything, I can believe what I choose. I choose to believe Jesus Christ is the savior of mankind.

Christ taught nonviolence and forgiveness. I'll try to explain why I feel this is so important.

A man came to a wishing tree. As he sat in its shade, he thought it would be nice to have a picnic lunch and a jug of wine. The food and wine materialized in front of him. Happily he started eating and drinking. As he ate it dawned on him the nature of the tree. "What if I think of a tiger?" he worried. A tiger appeared and ate him.

Arthur C. Clarke speculated that a sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic. There are two science fiction stories that deal with sort of a wishing tree built by an advanced civilization: Sphere and Forbidden Planet. In each of these stories human short comings change would should be a horn of plenty into a Pandora's box.

Humankind's control over the world around us is rapidly increasing. A head of a nation has powers that would have seemed God like a thousand years ago. Our ancestors imagined the ability to instantly obliterate cities or to survey the world from high above belonged only to beings like Odin or Zeus.

Human knowledge and power continue to increase. But we still think and act like hairless apes. Anger - to drive off enemies, Fear - to avoid danger, Lust - to perpetuate the species, Greed - to look after our material needs: In simpler times these would be valuable survival instincts. But when the power to wreak immense destruction becomes available to many, these instincts could cause the end of humanity.

Christ instructed us to be meek and forgiving. To be born in the spirit means the death of the natural man. As humankind comes of age, a forgiving and loving nature will be necessary for us to survive.

Christianity has been blamed for many wars. Some say Christianity has been tried and found wanting. I say Christianity has been found too difficult and left untried. Ghandi and Martin Luther King made sincere efforts to follow his teachings.

Following Christ is hard. If someone hit me on the cheek, I would want to strike him back. I'd be reluctant to turn the other cheek because I am afraid to seem a coward. I wonder if I am strong enough to appear weak. Many of Christs teachings are very difficult. But this would be a better planet if we at least tried to live in his ways.
